Position Summary

This is a full-time permanent, fiscal year position in the Division of Information Services reporting to the Director of Infrastructure Services. The Network Engineer is responsible for the effective, efficient, and secure operation of the College’s data and voice communication resources. The incumbent is responsible for evaluation and recommendation of equipment and services, coordinating acquisition and deployment of resources, monitoring of costs for accuracy and proper allocation, and testing and monitoring system function to ensure continuous reliable operation. He/she may supervise part-time temporary workers as conditions warrant.

Required Education and Work Experience

Associate’s degree.

Five (5) years experience in a network computing environment.

Experience in the planning, resource acquisition, and deployment of local area networks of 500 nodes or larger.

Experience with Windows and Linux/UNIX servers, including operating systems installation and configuration, e-mail management, and system security.

Familiarity with telecommunications technology including PABX equipment, E911, VOIP, ISDN BRI and PRI, local and long distance services, and wide area networking.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, and Other Characteristics

Knowledge of data network technology and equipment including Ethernet, TCP/IP, routing, LANs, WANs, and VOIP.

Knowledge of contemporary networking technology including TCP/IP, NAT/PAT, DHCP, wireless networks, firewalls, T1, Internet service, network security practices, network management software, and fiber optic and UTP cabling.

Knowledge of voice communications technology including contemporary PABX equipment and applications, voice mail, ACD, ISDN PRI and analog trunking, T1, local and long distance telephone service, and E911.

Skill in excellent oral and written communication.

Ability to plan, install and maintain complex communication systems.

Primary Tasks and Responsibilities

Provides primary support for all data communications which includes switched local area networks at all sites, extensive wide area networking connecting all sites, Internet service, and network management systems. Responsibilities include planning, acquisition, installation, programming, security, and support of data communication equipment, cabling, and services.

Monitors network function and traffic for secure, effective, and efficient operation. Evaluates, recommends, and implements preventive and remedial measures to improve network function and security.

Assists with management and integration of network-based resources including file servers, print servers, e-mail, student computer labs, and desktop systems.

Assists with voice communication resources which include multiple networked large and small scale PABX systems, voice mail, digital and analog trunking, local and long distance service, point-to-point network services, E911 service, ACD, management software, CDR, and work order software. Assists with planning, acquisition, installation, and support of all voice communication equipment and services.

Ensures timely and effectively completion of all trouble reports and work orders; tracks progress of work orders and maintains detailed records of all work requests.

Develops technical and administrative reports, budgets, and other materials relative to effective data and voice operations and management. Monitors equipment and service invoices for accuracy and approves invoices for payment. Assists with long range plans and budget estimates for telecommunications service improvements.

May perform other duties as assigned.

Full-time employees at Southwest work 37.5 hours per week. Benefits include health insurance, annual and sick leave, tuition assistance and retirement.

Minimum Salary: $40,944.00
